How we test and rate products

Every beforeknow review follows the same four-stage process: shortlist on evidence, verify the spec sheet, stress the weak points, then score against a fixed weighting. Affiliate links pay for the work, but they never decide the outcome.

1. Shortlisting

We start with what people are genuinely choosing between at a given price, pulled from marketplace bestseller movement, retailer stock patterns and reader questions. A product with strong marketing but no real-world traction does not make the list.

2. Spec verification

Marketing pages and retail listings disagree more often than you would expect. We cross-check every number against the manufacturer's own datasheet or regulatory filing. Where a claim cannot be verified, we mark it as unconfirmed rather than repeat it.

3. Stress-testing the weak points

Most products fail in predictable places: thermal throttling on thin laptops, battery health collapse on cheap wearables, hinge and port wear on anything portable, coating wear on kitchen appliances. We deliberately look for the failure mode first, then see how well the design defends against it.

4. Scoring

The rating out of 5 is weighted, not a vibe:

Performance
30%

Sustained, not peak. What it does on day 200.

Build & reliability
25%

Materials, tolerances, common failure points.

Value at street price
25%

Scored against what it actually sells for today.

After-sales support
20%

Warranty terms, service reach, parts availability.

Corrections policy

If we get something wrong, tell us at hello@beforeknow.com. Confirmed factual errors are corrected within 48 hours and the page carries a dated update note. We do not quietly edit a verdict without saying so.

Common questions

Does affiliate commission change your rankings?
No. Commission rates are broadly similar across the products we cover, and we do not accept payment for placement. When a cheaper product wins, it goes at the top and we link it.
Do brands get to see reviews before publication?
Never. Brands can send corrections after publication, and we update the page with a dated note if a factual error is confirmed.
How often are reviews updated?
Prices are treated as indicative only and we link to the live Amazon listing. Verdicts are re-checked at least every quarter, and immediately when a successor model launches.
What does the rating out of 5 actually measure?
It is a weighted score: performance 30%, build and reliability 25%, value at current street price 25%, and after-sales support 20%. A product can score well on paper and still lose points for poor service coverage.
